Abstract

Objective: For demonstrating of learning period, we retrospectively evaluated our first 25 cases who undergone laparoscopic nephrec-tomy.

Materials and Method: Between May 2011 and July 2012, 25 patients who undergone la-paroscopic nephrectomy in our clinic. They were evaluated for operation indication, ope-ration time, bleeding, conversion to open sur-gery, major complication, and usage of analge-sics and stay of hospitalization. All procedures were done by two surgeons with limited experi-ence for laparoscopic surgery.

Results: We performed laparoscopic neph-rectomy and laparoscopic radical nephrectomy at 20 and 5 patients, respectively. Average blee-ding was 90(50-1100) ml. In one of the 25 cases, conversion to open surgery was needed due to renal vein injury. Average duration of surgery was 175 (90-300) minutes. Average hospital stay was 4(1-16) days. None of these patients needed narcotic analgesic.

Conclusion: Learning period can be over-come with long operation time, low complicati-on rate and low conversion rate to open surgery.

Key Words: Laparoscopy, nephrectomy, le-arning period.
